The processing of automotive components is one of the important links in the automotive manufacturing process, involving many different processes. This article will introduce the four major processes for processing automotive parts in Dalian, including casting, forging, stamping, and injection molding.
1、 Casting
Casting is a molding process in which molten metal or alloy is poured into a model and allowed to solidify before being removed. Casting is widely used in the automotive industry as it can produce parts with complex shapes and high dimensional accuracy.
There are three different types of casting methods. They are pressure casting, gravity casting, and low-pressure casting.
1. Pressure casting. Pressure casting is a method of forming by using high pressure to force molten metal or alloy into the mold for filling. The commonly used pressure casting methods include high-pressure casting, low-pressure casting, and gravity pressure casting.
2. Gravity casting. Gravity casting is a method that utilizes gravity as the casting mechanism. This method typically uses cast sand or cast metal molds to produce castings. Gravity casting is usually divided into two types: sand core gravity casting and metal mold gravity casting.
3. Low pressure casting. Low pressure casting is a casting method that involves filling the mold with molten metal through an inlet of a low-pressure injection system located below the mold. Low pressure casting can be produced using cast sand cores or metal molds. It can produce precision castings with complex shapes and produce light earth shell castings.
2、 Forging
Forging is a method of forming metal parts through the plastic deformation of metal materials under appropriate pressure. Forging is a common method for processing automotive components, which has the advantages of low cost, high production efficiency, and high dimensional accuracy.
According to the different principles of forging, forging can be divided into the following types:
1. Free forging. Free forging is a method of forming metal parts by applying pressure to heated metal materials. Free forging can produce large workpieces, such as crankshafts and connecting rods for motorcycles and automobiles.
2. Die forging. Die forging is the process of applying pressure to a heated metal material, allowing it to flow through a mold to form metal parts of different shapes. Molds are usually made of steel or cast iron and can produce various connectors for large-scale projects such as highways and bridges.
3. Cold forging. Cold forging is a forging method performed at room temperature on metal materials. Although the cost of cold forging is relatively high, it is often used in automotive manufacturing to manufacture components with higher strength due to its ability to generate relatively large compressive stresses.
